DIY Diane Von Furstenberg style wrap dress: Channeling 70’s glamour

DIY Diane Von Furstenburg Style Dress -Justine Abbitt

I’m done with my Diane Von Furstenburg wrap dress! In black silk jersey, a dream to work with. And if you have never sewn with it, i would advise you rush out and buy some!

If you follow fashion, you may have read about all the hoopla of the 40th anniversary of DVF’s iconic wrap dress of which I wrote ALL ABOUT in this post here.

I bought two originals myself back in 1996 on clearance at Saks Fifth Avenue after the style was re-released, and have since always wanted to try making one. Why would I when when I have the originals, you ask? Because I’m no longer a twenty six year old size two, silly! But size six isn’t so bad, really. I exercise, eat right, and while I know I will probably never be a size two again, I’m happy with what I’ve got.DIY Diane Von Furstenburg Style Dress -Justine AbbittMy dad took these photos. He’s a former motion picture editor and was a photographer in New York before he came to Hollywood, but now he is retired . He and my stepmom are indispensable with helping with the kids. I am so lucky to have them. Thanks for the great photos Dad! Please leave lots of comments so he will take more pictures for me!

This was one of those projects that took me a long time to make. I worked on it on and off for about a month. I don’t know why it took me so long, but I just wasn’t inspired, and then I had a sudden bust of sewing energy the past few days. My head is swimming with so many ideas I want to make for myself.

Recently I was inspired by another blogger who is having a Ready To Wear Fast for 2014 and had sign ups for it on her blog Goodbye Valentino. So I took the pledge, and although I probably won’t be able to stick to it 100%, I’ll try.

DVFdressdetailIn the post I mentioned above, I wrote about my search for the original sewing pattern DVF released with Vogue patterns in 1976.DVYdressPhoto from Musings from Marilyn

Β I found a similar pattern, a knockoff from the time by Simplicity that was similar in every aspect. Talk about copycats! Oversized 70’s collar, belt, French cuffs. I love it! And then I had the incredible surprise that some mystery fabric I bought for two dollars a yard at my favorite shop turned out to be silk jersey!il_570xN.489442366_qkcl

Justine, beautiful dress. I am really lovin’ the buttons. And yes, your dad took some amazing pictures. They make it easy to see the details of the dress.

I love your wrap dress. Great dress; great photos. Good luck with the RTW Fast. I agree that 100% adherence probably isn’t realistic but a good attempt is always worth it! I may check out that fast myself.
